Medical interns on strike again

Medical interns in government hospitals and facilities have decided to go on strike citing non payment.

Speaking to journalists at Mulago Guest House, the interns through their Association President Robert Lubega said their industrial action commenced at midnight.

They say the decision is informed by government’s failure to provide them with medical supplies and also failing to pay their salaries and allowances.

According to Lubega, 61 of their colleagues have spent three months starting November 2017 without a pay while 970 medical interns across the country have not received their January salary.

When contacted, Minister of state for Health in charge of general duties, Ms Sarah Opendi urged the interns to be patient with government as their matters are sorted.

"The list of interns for payment has already been sent to their respective placements and their money will be deposited to accounts this week. We delayed because we were still compiling all interns," she said.
