Protests erupt in Ntungamo against Rukutana’s 20 vote lead over Kabasharira

Supporters of Naomi Kabasharira have sparked protests in Ntungamo district demanding for the immediate resignation of National Resistance Movement (NRM) EC officials and the declaration of their candidate as the winner of the Rushenyi County primaries.

Transport has been paralyzed as angry locals cut off roads with stones and sticks protesting the 20-votes lead by Mwesigwa Rukutana over Kabasharira.

Protests are taking place at Rwentobo-Rwahi trading centers.

A re-tallying process to ascertain the legitimate winner of the Rushyenyi County MP primary race between Kabasharira and Minister Rukutana recently ended prematurely after chaos ensued resulting from declaring results of an area where voting allegedly did not happen.

NRM EC chairman, Tanga Odoi asked to be given two days to pronounce the winner, and the two days elapse today

Initially, Kabasharira had been announced the victor of the hotly contested race before Rukutana petitioned for a review of the results.

Using available Declaration Results (DR) forms, Odoi reconciled results from either party, and where results were altered in some cells, it was immediately resolved.

For instance, in Rabasheji cell, Rukutana had been given 56 votes yet the DR forms indicated 26 votes, a difference of 30 votes.

According to Kabasharira, about six cells in Ruyonza, there are instances where there were more voters than the actual number of people logically expected in the cell.

“In a cell which could have 280, they voted 620 people,” she said.
