2021 Elections Watch

Police are holding the Agule County Member of Parliament Hon Francis Mukula 46, for causing chaos during last week's NRM party flag bearer elections.

Mukula, who is commonly known as 'Ekotapini' is also accused of allegedly having a gun which he later turned to shoot two people.

He is a member of financial planning and economic development at the 10th Parliament.

SSP Cyrus Samson Omara the North Bukedi Regional Police Commander confirmed that they are having Mukula in their coolers.

"It's true we have that honorable in our coolers for causing chaos and allegedly shooting two people.”

The doctor's report indicate that a bullet got stuck in the chest of one victim and she has undergone a successful operation to remove the bullet.

He said Mukula who was contesting for the NRM flag bearer with four others in the newly created Gogonyo county in Pallisa district is alleged to have shot the two after getting irked by the outcome of the elections that saw another contender declared winner.

He said after investigations are complete the suspect will be arraigned in Court.

In a bitter missive yesterday, President Museveni who also is the chairman of the NRM warned that whoever is found culpable to beating people, threatening or using violence will be held accountable, arrested and no bond should be sanctioned for them.

Museveni made the statements in reply to the situation surrounding Minister Mwesigwa Rukutana.

Following his defeat to Naome Kabasharira, former Deputy Attorney General Rukutana turned chaotic and in the scuffle, he grabbed a gun from one of his bodyguards and shot and injured one person who was rushed to hospital in critical condition whereas one vehicle was also destroyed.

The minister was on Saturday arrested together with his three bodyguards and detained at Mbarara Central Police Station before being taken to court and remanded consequently.

Speaking in general about all forms of chaos exhibited during the party’s election to pick flagbearers in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, Museveni said those who orchestrated the same will face the wrath of the law.

“Those who beat people, like in Bukono, are all in jail or on the run.  They will be fully accountable with robust charges; assault, attempted murder, murder, etc. Those who altered results will go to jail on forgery, fraud, subversion, etc. and their forgeries will not stand,” he said.
