The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has given a green light to Victoria University to conduct online classes for students over the Coronavirus pandemic.

Government in March ordered the closure of all educational institutions and for close to six months now, no classes have been going on.

However, in an August,31, 2020 letter to the Victoria University Vice Chancellor, the NCHE Executive Director, Prof.Mary Okwakol says the institution is free to start doing online classes for students.

“I am pleased to inform you that after due consideration, the National Council for Higher Education has granted you permission to roll-out emergency ODel for the attached programs,” the letter reads in part.

Consequently, the university has been allowed to conduct online classes for a period of 12 months or for the duration of the Coronavirus pandemic as will be determined by relevant authorities.

“However, you may apply for a renewal of the permission at least two months before the expiry of the 12-month period, if necessary.”

The development comes on the backdrop of an announcement by the Uganda Christian University to reopen online for new and continuing students on September 15, 2020.

In July, the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) released guidelines for e-learning in institutions of higher learning across the country to commence remote teaching and learning activities during the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown.

According to the guidelines, universities were asked by the NCHE to carry out a survey on students indicating their willingness or inability to participate in the proposed arrangement and that those no willing to study online ought to have provided

The National Council for Higher Education asked institutions to apply for accreditation for e-learning.
