Hotels Union demands ratification on decent work for domestic workers
Government’s reluctance to ratify and domesticate the International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention 189 on decent work for domestic workers has negatively impacted on Uganda labor force.
This was uncovered during the two days’ national executive council meeting for Uganda hotels, food, Tourism and allied workers’ union held at Kenendia hotel in Katwe.

The Uganda Hotels, Food, Tourism, Supermarkets and allied workers’ union (HTS-Union) is demanding that government moves very fast to ratify and domesticate the international labour organisation convention 189 on decent works for domestic workers in accordance with existing labour laws and fundamental labour standards.
The general secretary HTS-Union, Stephen Mugole said government should move fast to enact the law on decent work for domestic workers.
Mugole said the union promotes and protects the rights of workers through collective bargaining by negotiating with employers on behalf of the unionised workforce.
He said that there was a big blow when Nakumatti and Uchumi closed down, but they have made plans and negotiations to the five star Hotels that have come up and these include Protea, Skys in Naguru, Pearl of Africa, Golden Turip among others.
He urged government to enhance regulations and protect the rights of workers being exploited by the mushrooming labour agencies in the market
The Principle labour officer ministry of gender labour and social development Apollo Ozoma says government is engaging different stake holders to ratify and domesticate the international labour organisation convention 189 on decent work for domestic workers
Onzoma urged the union leaders to operate within the constitutional mandates to scale down on the leadership conflicts within the trade unions.
