Former Mulago hospital Executive Director, Dr. Ddumba dies

Former Mulago National Referral Hospital Executive Director, Dr. Edward Ddumba has died.

He served as Mulago hospital ED between 2006 and 2010.

“It is with sadness that I inform you of the death of our dear member - Rtn. Dr. Edward Dumba, which occurred at about 1.30a.m this morning. Kitalo nnyo. Kitalo ddala. Details of the burial arrangements shall be shared further this morning,” said a family member in a message.

By the time of his death, Ddumba was the medical director at St. Francis Hospital in Nsambya. He had been appointed to the post in May 2016 by the hospital's board of governors.

He previously served as the Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at Mulago National Referral Hospital but also a member of the Teaching Staff of the Department of Medicine at Makerere University College of Heath Sciences for over 20 years.

Dr Ddumba was also a board member, senior medical expert, and consultant of the Uganda Sickle Cell Rescue Fund.

He was also a prominent and active member of the Rotary Uganda community.

Fellow medics have taken to social media to eulogise Dr Ddumba.

Former Forum for Democratic Change president Dr Kizza Besigye tweeted, "Great loss at a terrible time!"

Senior pediatrician Dr Sabrina Kitaka remembered Dr Ddumba as, "A great teacher and mentor. He taught us at Neurology and Internal medicine. He was always humble despite his numerous accolades."

It was under Dr.Ddumba's tenure as Executive Director that Mulago hospital's expansion started and  refurbishing of its  heart institute  whereas by the time he left, the women’s speciality hospital was under construction.
