16 dead, scores missing after floods hit Bundibugyo

A total of 16 people have been confirmed dead whereas several others missing after floods caused by heavy rains hit Bundibugyo district on Saturday morning.

"One more dead body has just been discovered in Bundibugyo Town council making a total of 16. Red Cross volunteers have been deployed to start on the house to house needs assessment and registration to establish needs of the people," said a statement from the Red Cross spokesperson, Irene Nakasiita on Sunday morning.

"Another team is still in the community help in tracing and recovery of the dead bodies."

According to the humanitarian body, the floods hit Harugale sub-county after a heavy downpour on Saturday morning that saw a number of houses submerged by the waters.

"The displaced persons have been gathered in 4 places including two schools in Harugale Subcounty and two churches in Harugale and Busaru."

They said that they have been joined by the military in searching for mission persons after the deadly floods. Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) on Saturday warned travelers that the FortPortal - Bundibugyo road had been cut off due to the floods from the heavy rains.

"The affected section along Fortportal-Bundibugyo road has been partially opened to traffic. Our maintenance team continues to clear the debris along the road shoulders," UNRA media manager Allan Ssempebwa said on Saturday.
