Four Soroti University staff charged with abuse of office

Four officials of Soroti University were yesterday charged at the Anti- Corruption Court with three accounts of abuse of office, causing financial loss to the government and conspiracy to defraud the university.

They were denied bail and remanded to Luzira prison until the 12th of November 2019 when their bail application will be heard by the same court.

The suspects that were arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court Grade One Magistrate Moses Nabende are; Omeke David, the Assistant Estate Officer; Odong James, the Internal auditor; the Acting University bursar Gilbert Denis Otim and Samuel Omoding the Acting University Secretary.-

It is alleged that between the 11th and 25th of September this year, the four requisitioned, processed and made payment of Shs 15.9 million to themselves and others purportedly for facilitation to participate in a public private partnership conference at Kampala Serena hotel.

The suspects were however denied bail and sent to Luzira Prison until when the bail application will be heard on Tuesday next week

The others that are yet to be arraigned before court over related cases is the deputy vice chancellor of the university, Lawrence Too-Okema.

Their arrest came after the Anti-Corruption unit received complaints from a whistle blower relating to the abuse of office, embezzlement of government funds, soliciting and receiving, mismanagement of Shs 5.3 billion among others at Soroti University.
