Journalists give police one-week ultimatum to respond to their demands

The Uganda Journalists Association(UJA) has given Uganda police one week to respond to their eight-point petition following the recent protests at Makerere University where  several journalists were left nursing wounds after being roughed up by the police.

The journalists petitioned the force at the beginning of this week, complaining about the continuous brutality and violation of their media freedom.

Kazibwe Bashir Mbaziira, the president of UJA said: "To this effect the media is giving the Uganda police leadership up to Thursday (14th) this month as a deadline to respond to our petition and if they do not respond to our call on that day, we are going to convene a press conference where we shall address the nation through the media on our next course of action,”

Addressing the media in Kampala on Friday, Kazibwe also launched a campaign to expose police officers who are fond of brutalising journalists.

He said the media will blacklist all the police officers cited in the act of assaulting journalists.

“We have the intention of blacklisting them., exposing these particular officers and dragging them to court of law to account for their evil acts. So far, we have a number of them. We are compiling data from several colleagues that were on the scene,” he said.

However, the police spokesperson Fred Enanga rejected reports that the force  has been brutalising the media.

He said journalists did not attach any physical evidence to their petition and the force has never received any evidence from the president of the association.
