Muslim youths trained in Sacco management

Over 60% Muslim women and youth from the regions of Kampala, east and west Buganda were trained in SACCO Management

The workshop were organised by the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council department of women and youth at UMSC headquarters old Kampala.

Some of the skills acquired by the participants include how to register a SACCO ,financial literacy and roles of SACCO members among others.

While addressing the participants, the secretary for women and youth Radhiyyah Namakula revealed that many SACCOs in the country have collapsed because of poor management skills.

She said SACCOs play role in improving household incomes and empowering Muslim women and youth.

“If Muslim women and youth don’t get access to funds, they will be left behind. That is why we need to build the capacity of our SACCOs so that they can access funds and start income generating projects,"she said.

She said since the youth and women make up bigger percentage of Uganda’s population, policy makers, donors and planners should consider them in their programming as one way of bettering the lives of the young people in this country.

Okello Francis, from the project for financial inclusion in rural areas under the ministry of Finance, urged participants to keep political affiliations out of SACCOs in they really want to benefit from such programmes.

He said poverty hurts everyone regardless of their political parties therefore everyone should be treated equally not according to their religious or political beliefs.

He noted that for any SACCOs to stand a test of time, it must be fully registered with an address structures and roles for various stakeholders.
