GMO Bill: US trying to force Museveni's hand, say MPs

Featured

A section of legislators led by Bufumbira East Member of Parliament Dr. James Nsaba Buturo have warned the American Ambassador in Uganda Deborah Malac against interfering in the affairs of Uganda advising her to stick to the standard international diplomatic principles.

Addressing members of the press at parliament this morning, Dr Buturo and others legislators wondered why the government has remained mum as the American ambassador interferes in Ugandan affairs.

The tough talking legislators said they were not afraid of being denied visas to the United States but want government to call Malac to order in the shortest time possible.

Recently, several high profile Ugandan government officials have been denied US visas leaving many questioning Uganda's relationship with the United States of America.

The most prominent still in government was Permanent Secretary to the Judiciary Pius Bigirimana.  Former Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura and family are reportedly blacklisted from travel to the USA.

Buturo, who once served as the Ethics minister, said it is not proper for Malac's continued comments on the conduct of the Ugandan government to go unchecked.

He wondered what agenda Malac is trying to push by condemning some of the actions of the Ugandan government which hosts her.

The MPs attacked Malac for questioning President Yoweri Museveni's refusal to ascent to the Genetic Engineering Regulatory Bill 2018.

Buturo and the other MPs accused Malac of trying to coerce President Museveni to sign into law a bill that several eminent scientists in and out of the country have warned against.

Our efforts to reach out to the American ambassador for a comment on the accusations against her were futile
