Doctors call off strike again

Doctors under their umbrella body, Uganda Medical Association have called off their December 16 strike.

The association’s president, Dr Ekwaro Obuku made the announcement on Friday afternoon, saying that they have had a “successful discussion with government and do not see cause for the strike.”

“We have further suspended the industrial action because of the festive season which is characterized by accidents since even us doctors will be traveling to the villages, so we are not sure we will get services in the hospitals if the strike is on,” Obuku said.

He said that the association plans to consider the strike in April next year during budget allocations.

Last month’s doctors’ strike was called off after the government pledged to address their demands that included improved welfare of intern doctors and senior house officers, disbanding of the health monitoring unit, a  Shs 41 billion supplementary budget for drugs and medical supplies and enhancing salaries of doctors.

Doctors to strike, again!
