Opposition MPs critical of seven-year-term proposal

Opposition legislators have opposed the proposal to revise the term of Members of parliament from five to seven years.

This is one of the issues that were discussed by the National Resistance Movement-NRM parliamentary caucus on Tuesday chaired by President Museveni.

The Government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa told reporters that the proposal was one of the major issues discussed during the caucus meeting.

She disclosed that they had set up a seven member team to look into the technicality and legal aspects of the proposal for consideration.

The proposed extension of the term of office of the legislators was first raised by the Arua Municipality Member of Parliament, Ibrahim Abiriga.

He also disclosed plans to table the proposal before parliament for consideration. However, opposition legislators say the proposal is meant to hold Ugandans hostage and a clear demonstration of greed on the part of legislators.

Moses Kasibante, the Lubaga North MP, said the legislators are thinking about themselves at the expense of their voters.

He said this only demonstrates the fact that some MPs look at parliament as a source of their survival.

Anthony Akol, the Kilak County MP said those behind the proposal are risking, because they may never benefit from the proposal.

Betty Aol Ochan, the Gulu Woman MP described the move as unfair and selfish. She asked MPs to consider more critical issues instead of trying to prolong their stay in parliament.

Reagan Okumu, the Aswa County MP said the MPs quest for a seven year terms could be seen as a reward from President Museveni in appreciation for endorsing the scrapping of the presidential term limits.

Abott George Ouma, the Bukhooli Island MP, said there so many demerits with the proposed extension of the term of service for the legislators.
