Proceeds from 9th Pepsi Independence Golf tourney to buy cancer machine

As the country celebrates 57 years of independence on Wednesday, proceeds from this year’s Pepsi Independence Golf tournament will go towards the purchase of a cancer machine, officials have revealed.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, Tracy Kakuru Otatiina, the Corporate Communications Manager for Crown Beverages Limited, the manufacturers of Pepsi said October being a month for breast cancer awareness, they decided to turn the proceeds into buying a cancer screening machine.

“We decided that proceeds from the 9^th edition go towards the purchase of the cancer-detecting machine to help in early detection and treatment,”Kakuru said.

“We encourage people to take part in the tournament so that they contribute to the purchase of the machine.”

She said they have so far collected about shs200 million from partners adding that they will add proceeds from the golf tournament.

160 players to take part

David Sekitoleko, the Sheraton Hotel Kampala Business Development Consultant said 160 golfers will take part in the golf tournament at the Palm Valley Country with 35 professionals and the rest being amateurs.

“The professionals who will be fighting for the shs30 million prize will test the course starting Sunday up to Tuesday before amateurs come on Wednesday (Independence Day), Sekitoleko said.

“It will be a 9-hole course at the Palm Valley Golf and Country Club.”
