MPs put minister on spot over deaths of Ugandan workers in Arab world

Members of Parliament have tasked the minister for Gender, Labour and Social development Janat Mukwaya to explain the circumstances under which six Ugandans lost their lives in the Arab world where they had gone to work.

Legislators tabled documents on the floor of parliament showing how some of the remains that were returned had some parts of their bodies chopped off.

Last week five bodies of Uganda who had died in Kuwait and Dubai were flown back into the country.

Iganga municipality legislator Peter Mugema Panadol was the first to raise the matter of national importance in the Tuesday parliamentary sitting chaired by Speaker Rebecca Kadaga.

Mugema asked the minister to explain the circumstances under which some Ugandans lost their lives in some of the Arab countries where they had gone to look for green pasture.

Tabling documents, Mugema said some of the bodies inclduing that of Joy Kisakye returned with some missing parts.

Mukwaya tried to explain the circumstances under which some Ugandans lost their lives but some MPs shouted her down.

Meanwhile, Mbale woman legislator Connie Galiwango informed the House that some unknown gunmen are trailing her with the intent of ending her life.

Galiwango said the two body guards that had been deployed to protect her have since been withdrawn hence putting her life and family at risk.

Kadaga said she will take up the matter with the relevant security agencies.
