Rwanda minister advises nationals against traveling to Uganda, as news websites on both ends get blocked

Rwandan Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Olivier Nduhungirehe has advised nationals against making trips to Uganda until there is a ‘secure situation’

The minister reiterated that a travel advisory that Rwanda issued against traveling to Uganda will stay put and apply on all fronts until at a specific time which the Kampala government will release Rwandan citizens arrested in Uganda.

According to the Associated Press, Ugandan officials have made a counter-charge accusing Rwandan state agents of operating unlawfully in Uganda, including in the alleged abductions of Rwandan citizens wanted back home.

Following the signing of the MOU to resume activities across the border for Uganda and Rwanda, Nduhungirehe insinuated that Uganda would not implement the MOU resolutions in ‘good faith’

“Beyond the signature, beyond the handshake and beyond the beautiful pictures, the most important thing is implementation in good faith,” he said.

He would later highlight a scenario in which the Rwandan newspaper New Times alleged the Kampala government had blocked websites from Rwanda.

“This is against the spirit of the MOU agreement signed between Rwanda and Uganda.”

According to the East African Newspaper, the Uganda government admitted having blocked access to Rwandan sites over ‘security issues”.

While the pact between Rwanda and Uganda stands dully signed, the two countries are now embroiled in another digital war involving the blockage of news websites by both sides.
