Archbishop Luwum’s widow, Mary is dead
Mary Luwum, the widow to former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Janani Luwum has died at the age of 93.
According to a message from the Church of Uganda, Mary Luwum passed on at 3 pm at the International Hospital Kampala (IHK), days after she was diagnosed with cancer of the gallbladder.

“With deep regret, Archbishop Stanley Ntagali announces the death of Mama Mary Luwum, the wife of Church of Uganda’s martyred Archbishop Janani Luwum,” the message from the Anglican Church posted on their facebook page read in part.
The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda described the deceased as a faithful witness to God and Jesus for many years.
“Like her husband, her testimony has inspired many and will live on. We commend her to her Lord and pray for their family and all who grieve her passing,” Ntagali said.
“Mama Mary Luwum will be remembered as not being ashamed of the Gospel. She supported her husband’s decision to not flee Uganda when threatened by then-President Idi Amin. That decision ultimately led to his martyrdom on 16th February 1977.”
According to Ntagali in the 42 years following her husband’s assassination, Mary Luwum continued to dedicate her life to preaching the gospel and supporting the social-economic growth of the Church of Uganda.
The Anglican Church said burial arrangements are underway and that the same will be communicated in due course.
The deceased is survived by three boys and four girls.
