Uganda’s national housing backlog continues to grow alarmingly, standing at an estimated over 2.5 million units today. This in spite of several private sector players innovating affordable housing and housing finance, and Government’s interventions such as investing in infrastructure, introducing Building Control Regulations, and creating the Uganda National Housing Policy, among others.
This urgent challenge demands collaboration between Government, Private Sector, Civil Society and the Public.
Recognising this call to action, NBS Television and Housing Finance Bank will be hosting the inaugural NBS Housing Baraza on July 25, 2019 at the Kampala Serena Hotel under the theme Housing for Wealth Generation – improving household wealth through Uganda’s Real Estate.
This town hall-style meeting will give the public an opportunity to directly interact with leading real estate professionals from government and the private sector to appreciate the challenges and opportunities in achieving affordable housing and reducing the national housing backlog. Our objective is to demonstrate immediately available opportunities for individuals and groups to access decent modern affordable housing.
The NBS Housing Baraza will explore, among others:
• The impact of Uganda’s real estate tax regime across the value chain from acquiring land through to using completed developments as a tenant or homeowner;
• Various local and international housing, construction and financial innovations that can contribute to reducing the cost of providing affordable housing and housing finance; and
• How group savings and investment vehicles like Collective Investment Schemes, SACCOs and investment clubs can contribute to achieving affordable housing and housing finance.
The event will also feature the NBS Housing Bazaar – a purpose-built, free-to-access marketplace where our partners and other exhibitors will showcase their latest products, services and solutions in addressing the housing challenge in Uganda.
We are pleased to be joined in this initiative by key partners like Uganda Revenue Authority, National Water & Sewerage Corporation, National Housing & Construction Corporation, Roofings, RE/MAX Uganda, Kampala Capital City Authority and others who share our sense of urgency in addressing the housing shortfall. As collaborators in this initiative, we are all committed to driving and sharing the latest knowledge and innovation, demonstrating best practice and empowering consumers in the quest to achieve truly affordable housing and housing finance for all Ugandans, today.
