Britain set to boost trade and business in Uganda

By Rukia Nabbanja

Lord Dolar Amarshi Papot (the Prime Minister trade envoy to Uganda and Rwanda) has urged the country to think of trade with countries beyond its borders.

During a cocktail party held at the home of the Britain ambassador to Uganda, he said Uganda enjoys great potential for growth given the role that agriculture plays in development backed by the fertile soils.

He said that Uganda's fertility means the country can export to the United Kingdom and urges the government to provide favourable tax incentives, to facilitate the process.

"I think you need to open up borders to allow free movement of goods and services with neighbouring countries," Lord Papot said.

He urged Ugandan leaders to think of initiating trade with countries beyond its immediate neighbours because there are a lot of untapped opportunities.

He said this while responding to the media on Wednesday 18th June.

Papot has been to Uganda on several occasions in 2016, 2017 2018 and 2019 respectively on different assignments and for the Uganda and UK trade conventions. He was also born in Uganda and lived here before Amin expelled Asians from Uganda in 1972.

The British citizen went ahead to declare publicly his love for Uganda, ”If there was a football match between Uganda and India, I would support my country of birth Uganda.“

“It is the reason that when I was given the opportunity by Britain to represent it in Uganda, I did not hesitate,” he added.
