UNRA engages in conserving the environment

Uganda National Road Authority has launched a national wide project of tree planting that will ensure that roads built will be lined with trees across the country in a bid to conserve environment.

During the launch of Green Right of Way Program (GROW) on Thursday at Kajjansi interchange along the Kampala Entebbe ExpressWay Allen Kagina executive director UNRA said a total of 2,000 trees will be planted along Entebbe Expressway alone as one of the ways aimed at reducing the threat caused by the change of climate.
She noted that many more trees including indigenous and fruits trees will be planted on all the major roads in the country.
“This is a very important initiative and that is why we are planting trees and all our roads will be tree lined because these trees will help to absorb carbon," she said.
Kagina added that the involvement of community members is very important for the successful progress and sustainability project.
"This matter is very important in our life, the next generation should not suffer like the way we are suffering today," she noted.
She stated that planting trees is in line with fulfilling of the strong conditions of preserving and conserving the environment.
“The authority will work together with corporate world, the youth and women groups across the country for the maintenance of these trees," she said.
She further appealed to the public to keep the animals away from the trees that will be planted along the all roads.
The Chief Executive Officer of Vision Group, Robert Kabushenga said planting trees like mangoes, jackfruits among others will help the school going children to have food to eat in the community.
"This will give the community a sense of responsibility in looking after the trees and our children will have food to eat," he said.
He said it’s hard to fine green spaces in Kampala apart from the Golf Course.
Dr Michael Moses Odongo, the executive director of Uganda Road Fund stated that the budget that was allocated to the fund was reduced and this may suffocate the implementation of the ongoing project.
