Rural Electrification Agency Uganda launches affordable house wiring in Kayunga

EDWARD MAKANIKA

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) yesterday launched a pilot project called "affordable house wiring" in Bugaddu village, Busaana sub-county in Kayunga district.

The affordable house wiring technical solution was developed by NRECA International and is based on input from rural consumers, local electricians, and materials suppliers to ensure that the needs and local resources are clearly understood.

The location in Kayunga District which was the focus of yesterday’s event is the first of 20 pilot locations all over Uganda.

REA hopes to expand this initiative throughout Uganda upon successful completion of the pilot.

While talking at the function in Busaana village, the coordinator Power Africa, Andrew M. Herscowitz stressed that the innovation aims to achieve over 60% of the population of Uganda by the year 2027 meaning over 300,000 households would be connected every year.

Herscowitz added that if the pilot is successful, it is likely to save the government over $170 million.

Again Andrew talked about the initiative which was invented by REA and Power Africa of wiring houses on affordable prices.

The deputy executive director REA Mr. Godfrey Khaukha said people with single rooms will not be left out.

The newly appointed RDC Kayunga, Margaret Kikomeko thanked the people of Bugaddu for being very cooperative and welcoming to government initiatives and also appealed to every household to use the chance and have their houses lighting.
