Tension, uncertainity at FDC delegates conference

The FDC delegates conference kicked off minutes ago amidst  a cloud of uncertainty and tension as the largest opposition party prepares to elect a new president.

There were mini scuffles between organisers and delegates tangled over accreditation. Security at Namboole stadium, where the function is taking place is tight and police officers have surrounded the main conference hall.

Delegates started streaming into staduim as early as 6.00 am but a heavy downpour derailed some of the activities amd left many delegates soaked.

Yet the weather has not dampened the mood or enthusiasm of the 1228 delegates who are expected to cast their ballot to choose a leader, who will steer the party for the next five years.

Wasswa Biriggwa, the party chairman called upon the delegates to be united and peaceful. He said unlike the NRM, FDC provides a platform for all people to compete for the top positions.

Although there are four candidates in the race, the main contest is between the incumbent, Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu and Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the former MP for Kumi, whom some say has the support of Dr Kizza Besigye, the former FDC leader.

Muntu has been party president since 2012 and while he has been praised for his calmness and level-headedness, some say he has not been assertive enough. Muntu entered the hall to chants of "Oyera..Oyera" at 9.58 am. He was accompanied by his wife, Julie Muntu.

Amuriat, popularly known as POA, arrived at 10.20 am to loud cheers. He shook hands with Muntu and sat next to him but the two rarely exchanged glances.

By the time of writing this article, Dr Besigye had not yet arrived. However, he was expected to address delegates at the end of the election.

Voting according to the programme is expected to commence by 11.00am although given the disruption brought about by the rain, this is likely not to be possible.

At this point, it is difficult to tell whom between the two is ahead and party delegates expect a tight race.
