Mugabe resigns as president of Zimbabwe

Robert Mugabe has resigned as president of Zimbabwe.

Mugabe's resignation letter was read out to parliament by speaker Jacob Mudenda amidst jubilation from the legislators who had already gathered to impeach him.

"I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation with immediate effect," Mudenda read from the letter.

At 4:00pm: Senetor MonicaMutsvangwa moved a motion to impeach President Mugabe. The motion was seconded by James Maridadi.

Mutsvangwa argued that the president had become too old and no longer fit for office. She also accused Mugabe of failure to take any meaningful steps to stem endemic corruption which has become the country’s number one enemy as well as abrogating his presidential constitutional mandate to Grace Mugabe his wife.

The seconder of the motion, Maridadi also accused Mugabe of overseeing the collapse of the health system and failing to curb the high unemployment rates. “He should go now,” he said.

The legislators one after the other blamed Mugabe for letting down the country and his party for always throwing him back into the seat. They thanked ZDF commander Constantino Chiwenga for moving swiftly to end Mugabe’s alleged miserable rule.

However, the debate got heated when the Minsister of Justice Mabhuya Bonyongwe and the minister of finance Patrick Antony Chinamasa asked the speaker to terminate the debate.

Legislators turned rowdy and started shouting; “Mugabe must go,” prompting the speaker to go quiet for some time before returning to announce that the President has resigned.

The speaker adjourned the house saying a new president will be announced tomorrow (Wednesday)
