Lato Milk in initiative to offer free surgeries to disabled children

Pearl Dairy Limited, through their LATO Milk Brand, have launched what they termed as an ambitious project intended to provide medical and corrective surgeries to various disabled children in Uganda.

Partnering with various organizations, the company has launched the ‘Lato Help Pack,’ whose sales will help raise funds to provide the free medical surgeries for children.

“In in a bid to give disabled another chance to live normal lives, we decided to partner with other organisations to carry out surgeries. It is also part of our efforts to give back to our customers,” the company said in a statement released on Thursday.

“All the gross proceeds net of taxes from the pack will go towards the surgeries and these will be undertaken at the UMC Victoria Hospitals. So whatever the consumer pays for these packs goes directly for the cause.”

The first phase of the project which started in October 2018 and which will run for 12 months is according to the company intended to raise funds to perform over 150 surgeries but   20 of these have already been successfully done.

The children are carefully selected by a team of experts after a pre- screening exercise. The selected children are then examined by medical teams to determine the severity of the conditions.”

An independent governing committee has been put in place to identify the needy children through a set criterion to make sure that only the needy cases are selected.

The ‘Lato Help Pack’ comes in a Tetra Fino® Aseptic 500 ml package is available in various retail partners across the country.

According to the dairy company, the initiative has been undertaken together with Tetra Pak Limited, UMC Victoria Hospital, Madhvani Foundation, Alliance Media and Graphic Systems.

“By coming up with such an initiative, Lato Milk aims to inspire other companies and organizations to work towards the betterment of the communities they serve.”

A study done recently found out that over 1.4 million children are living with some form of disability and face discrimination and marginalization in society.
