URA to punish errant clearing firms

News -->

Uganda Revenue Authority shall revoke licenses of clearance firms which do not employ qualified personnel and fail to clear goods on time.

According to Dickson Kateshumbwa the commissioner customs at the URA said revenue has declined partly because some clearing firms take a long time to clear goods.

"URA will no longer jut license companies but also look at quality of human resource focusing on computer literacy, competence and capacity building,” said Kateshumbwa.

Every week, URA receive complaints about unethical behaviour by clearing firms.

URA believes this is because these firms employ unqualified people.

Kateshumbwa said customs clearance requires kills since technological advancement has taken over.

“The employee performance has to measured before being issued with an employment letter," he said.

According to URA, it should take no more than 2 days to clear goods.

Every year, URA will be making an assessment of the performance of clearing firms and incompetent firms shall have their licenses revoked.
