Jinja RDC, residents clash over sewer pipes

HAKIM KANYERE

Drama ensued when government officials led by Jinja Resident District Commissioner Eric Sakwa and staff of National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) attempted to stop locals from encroaching on land where sewer lines and water pipes pass in Walukuba, Masese Division.

Some people had started constructing houses on top of sewer lines leading to the intervention of Sakwa and NWSC officials.

This did not augur well with the locals who queried whether the officials could fairly resolve a dispute in which they had taken sides.

Charles Okuonzi the branch manager NWSC in Jinja told residents it is hazardous for individuals to construct near such high pressure pipes.

He said in case of bursts, there could be loss of life and property.

However the locals argued that many of their neighbours had already built permanent houses under watch of the same organisation.

In the recent past, Jinja has become a centre of land disputes where locals, investors wantonly encroach on public land.
