Otafiire summoned to parliament over govt silence on prosecutors’ strike

The parliamentary committee on government assurance has summoned the minister of justice and constitutional affairs, Maj Gen. Kahinda Otafiire over the continued government silence in regards to the ongoing prosecutors’ industrial action.

After six weeks on strike, prosecutors have maintained they will not return to work until their grievances that include being paid professional allowances, salary enhancements, and tax waivers, are resolved.

The strike has paralysed all organs that dispense justice from the courts to police and the prisons.

Prosecutors are the ones who determine which cases go to court , the ones without whose signature no criminal matter can proceed in court.

In fact, the police is stranded with suspects, some of whom committed crimes too grievous to allow them return to the community

The prosecutors led by their General Secretary Ayebare Proscovia while appearing before the same committee yesterday lamented poor working conditions and said their lives are also threatened in line of duty. They insisted on the strike until their demands are addressed by government.

The legislators on the committee led by their Chairperson Kaps Fungaroo, Luuka South Mp Steven Kisa, Nakaseke South Mp Luttamaguzi Ssemakula are also advising government to withdraw all the Presidential pledges that government feels they cannot fulfil.

To them this will help reduce on the increasing industrial actions by different associations of public servants

The committee is expected to interface with the minister major General Kahinda Otafiire on Tuesday next week
