Will the new districts hold elections?

A section of legislators are concerned about delays by the Electoral Commission to hold elections in the newly created six districts.

The electoral Commission is supposed to organise elections for the women Member of Parliament and local government councils, but this is yet to be realized due to budget constraints.

The newly created six districts that were supposed to become operational at the start of 2018/19 financial year are: Nabilatuk, Kapelebyong, Bugweri, Kwania, Kasanda and Kikuube.

The Electoral Commission was supposed to hold elections for the Woman MPs in Hoima district after the former MP Kaahwa Tophace Byagira chose to represent Kikuube district that was curved out of Hoima.

Months after the political parties conducted their primaries, hopes of having an election in some of these new districts are fading. T

According to some legislators, the delay has caused frustrations and impatience amongst the electorates and political aspirants.

"People do know what to do. They have spent a lot of money on mobilisation for the elections but now they are wondering whether they will ever take place," one of the MPs told us.

According to the Electoral Commission Shs 2.5 billion is needed to organise the elections in the six new districts.

To some legislators, the delay is not due to lack of funds, but suspect that government could be afraid of losing some of the seats in the new districts to the opposition.

"They fear the People Power wave which has engulfed the country," one of the MPs said.
