The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has supported a proposed private member’s bill seeking to amend laws governing the election and remove of the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), arguing that the office should be subject to accountability mechanisms similar to other constitutional positions.

PLU said it supports the initiative by Dennis Namara to seek permission from the Speaker of Parliament to introduce a private member’s bill on the matter.

The pressure group argued that while Parliament has provisions for accountability of several constitutional office holders, including the President, Speaker, ministers and parliamentary commissioners, the office of the Leader of the Opposition should also have clearly defined accountability procedures.

"We appreciate Dennis Namara for taking the initiative to seek leave from the Speaker to prepare a private member’s bill. If Parliament has the power to remove the President, the Speaker, ministers and parliamentary commissioners from office under the law, then the office of the Leader of the Opposition should not be treated differently," PLU said.

The group added that it expects Members of Parliament who associate with PLU to support the proposed legislation once it is formally presented before Parliament.

The proposed amendment has sparked debate among political actors, with supporters arguing that it would strengthen accountability within Parliament, while critics are expected to scrutinise its implications for the independence of the opposition.

PLU also reiterated its call for peaceful political engagement and urged Ugandans to reject hate speech and actions that could undermine national unity.

The group further encouraged citizens to report cases of corruption and misuse of public resources through the relevant authorities to allow investigations and legal action to take place.

PLU said it remains a pressure group that works closely with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and called on its supporters to participate in upcoming Local Council elections.

The organisation also appealed for continued efforts towards peace, unity and social cohesion across the country.
