Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), through its flagship brand Uganda Waragi, has commissioned a community infrastructure project at Port Bell Landing Site in Luzira, installing solar-powered floodlights and waste management facilities aimed at improving sanitation, security and livelihoods.
The project forms part of Uganda Waragi's 60th Diamond Jubilee celebrations and is intended to address long-standing challenges of poor waste disposal, insecurity and limited business hours at the lakeside market.
The commissioning ceremony was officiated by Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga, alongside Nakawa Division Mayor Ali Buken, popularly known as Nubian Li, KCCA Director for Gender, Community Services and Production Sheila Birungi Gandi, and leaders of the Port Bell Landing Site.
Port Bell Landing Site supports more than 300 fishermen, boat operators and vendors, most of them women and young people trading in fresh fish and produce.
For years, inadequate waste management led to open dumping along the lakeshore, while the absence of lighting exposed traders to theft and insecurity after dark, forcing many—particularly women—to close their businesses early.
Speaking at the launch, Uganda Breweries Limited Managing Director Felicite Nson said the company has maintained a close relationship with the Port Bell community for decades.
"Port Bell Landing Site is the immediate neighbour to our brewery facility and has been the heart of our production home for decades. Uganda Waragi's 60-year journey is completely intertwined with the story of this community," she said.
Nson noted that the company had previously invested in modern ablution blocks and sanitation facilities under its Water of Life initiative and said the latest investment seeks to improve health, safety and economic opportunities for the surrounding community.
Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo praised the initiative, saying investments in community infrastructure directly support vulnerable groups and strengthen the city's food supply chain.
"Public infrastructure must serve the people wherever they are on the economic pyramid. I applaud this practical, community-driven approach to protecting the livelihoods of vulnerable women and youth who keep Kampala's food supply chain moving," he said.
Sheila Birungi Gandi said the project complements Kampala's Smart City agenda by promoting renewable energy and cleaner public spaces.
"Clean environments are essential for healthy populations. Through sustainable partnerships like this, we can reduce epidemic risks and enhance the quality of life for our residents," she said.
Port Bell Landing Site Vice Chairman Peter Kyeyune welcomed the project, saying it addresses long-standing concerns over insecurity and poor sanitation.
"For years, our people battled total darkness and severe sanitation risks that directly harmed our children and swallowed our daily profits. Uganda Waragi has answered our loudest cries for safety, proper hygiene and the ability to trade into the night with peace of mind," he said.
UBL said it has established a maintenance framework with the landing site committee and is working with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to ensure regular waste collection and the long-term sustainability of the project.
According to the company, the infrastructure investment builds on previous initiatives in Port Bell and Luzira, including sanitation projects, clean-up campaigns and the Water of Life programme, which focuses on improving public health and access to sanitation.
