KAMPALA — Former Kampala Lord Mayor and senior counsel Erias Lukwago has been transferred to Kira Division, three days after he was reportedly arrested by military operatives at his residence in Wakaliga.

The development comes amid heightened political tensions surrounding the prosecution of opposition figure Kizza Besigye, whom Lukwago has been representing in court.

According to information available, Lukwago was arrested on Monday morning by armed operatives who reportedly raided his home before taking him to an undisclosed location.

His whereabouts remained unclear for several days, raising concerns among family members, legal colleagues and political allies.

Sources now say he was brought to Kira Road Police Station on Thursday morning ahead of possible criminal proceedings.

The reported charges mirror those currently facing Besigye, whose legal team, including Lukwago, has been challenging aspects of the state's case in court.

Lukwago's arrest reportedly occurred as he was preparing to seek a written court order compelling the Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to appear in proceedings related to allegations of abduction and torture raised in a suit filed by Besigye against the government and the First Son.

By publication time, authorities had not issued an official statement detailing the circumstances of Lukwago's arrest, the legal basis for his detention, or the specific allegations supporting the reported charges.

Neither the Uganda Police Force nor the Uganda People's Defence Forces had publicly commented on the matter.

The arrest is likely to attract significant public and legal scrutiny given Lukwago's prominence as a lawyer, opposition politician and one of the country's most recognizable legal advocates.
