As Uganda commemorated Heroes Day, leaders and residents in Mityana District paid tribute to Major General Kasirye Gwanga, describing him as a transformative figure whose influence on agriculture, community development and self-reliance continues to shape lives across the district.
During Heroes Day reflections, local leaders highlighted the former military officer's commitment to improving livelihoods through farming, health awareness and community mobilization, saying his contributions remain visible years after his passing.
Mityana NRM Chairperson John Kintu said Kasirye Gwanga dedicated much of his life to empowering ordinary citizens through practical development initiatives.
"Gen Kasirye Gwanga believed that communities could transform their lives through hard work and self-reliance. He consistently encouraged people to embrace agriculture, supported health-related initiatives, and inspired many residents to become productive citizens," Kintu said.
Leaders noted that the late General's passion for farming helped change perceptions about agriculture in the district, encouraging residents to view it not only as a source of food but also as a viable pathway to economic transformation.
They said his advocacy for modern farming practices inspired many households to venture into commercial agriculture, helping improve incomes and household welfare.
Kintu said the values Kasirye Gwanga championed remain as relevant today as they were during his lifetime.
"Even after his passing, the lessons he taught about discipline, patriotism and development remain relevant. His legacy continues to motivate many young people and farmers across Mityana," he said.
Residents who participated in Heroes Day activities said recognizing local heroes such as Kasirye Gwanga helps preserve the spirit of sacrifice, service and nation-building that has contributed to Uganda's progress.
As the country honored its heroes, leaders in Mityana said the most fitting tribute to Kasirye Gwanga would be for citizens to embrace the principles he stood for, including hard work, community service and economic self-sufficiency.
They urged young people to draw inspiration from his example and play an active role in the development of their communities.
Kasirye Ggwanga, who died on June 9, 2020, at the age of 68, was a decorated UPDF officer, farmer and community mobiliser.
After retiring from active military service, he became one of Uganda's most prominent advocates of commercial agriculture, using his farms in Mityana, Mubende and Mukono to demonstrate modern farming practices and encourage wealth creation through agriculture.
His outspoken promotion of self-reliance, environmental conservation and patriotism earned him admiration far beyond the military circles in which he first rose to prominence.
In Mityana and neighbouring districts, many residents credit his farming demonstrations and mentorship with inspiring a new generation of commercial farmers, helping cement his reputation as one of the region's most influential agricultural champions.
