The Deputy Speaker of the Buganda Parliament, Hajji Ahmed Lwasa, has praised subjects from Buddu and Bugerere counties for their continued support to Kingdom development programmes, while urging a shift in mindset toward productivity and higher standards.
He made the remarks at the Buganda Kingdom headquarters in Bulange, Mengo, where leaders from the two counties contributed Shs 8,140,000 under the Luwalo Lwaffe initiative, a programme designed to support socio-economic development activities across the Kingdom.
The contribution was presented on behalf of the Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, as part of ongoing mobilisation for Kingdom-wide development efforts.
Lwasa used the occasion to rally subjects to embrace the “Musitule Omutindo” (Let’s Raise Standards) campaign, which focuses on improving education, agriculture, healthcare, trade and household incomes.
“Raising standards requires us to correct how we approach our work and actively transform our circumstances so that we can progress. We must take responsibility and move away from excuses, especially in our work—only then can we truly improve our standards,” he said.
He stressed that sustainable development within Buganda depends on personal discipline and collective responsibility, urging communities to prioritise productivity over complacency.
Buganda Kingdom Minister for Local Government, Tourism and Diaspora Affairs Joseph Kawuki also addressed the gathering, calling on subjects to protect Kingdom assets from encroachment and land grabbing.
He warned that continued encroachment on properties such as county headquarters and tourism sites could undermine the Kingdom’s development agenda.
“We must remain vigilant and protect our assets. Land grabbing is a serious threat to our development priorities,” Kawuki said.
Meanwhile, Bugerere County Chief Samuel Ssemugooma raised concern over what he described as growing external influence discouraging farmers from coffee growing in favour of less sustainable crops such as sugarcane.
He warned that such shifts are contributing to declining household incomes and undermining the Kingdom’s agricultural priorities.
The event drew representatives from several sub-counties, including Ssaabawaali Galiraaya, Musaale Kangulumira, Mutuba I Kitimbwa in Bugerere, and Mutuba 23 Kyazanga in Buddu, underscoring broad grassroots participation in the Kingdom’s mobilisation drive.
