The Uganda Medical Association has expressed sorrow following the death of Helen Nakimuli, the District Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala.
In a statement dated April 21, the Association’s president, Frank R. Asiimwe, described the news as “profound shock” and extended condolences to Nakimuli’s family, the people of Kalangala, and the Parliament of Uganda.
“We received the news of the untimely passing with a heavy heart,” the statement read, emphasising the collective grief within the medical fraternity and the nation at large.
The Association underscored its commitment to maintaining the highest ethical and professional standards in healthcare, noting that while medical practitioners strive to preserve life, not all outcomes can be controlled.
“Even under the most diligent care and in the most unexpected circumstances, the risk of mortality can never be eliminated,” the statement said.
UMA also expressed solidarity with healthcare workers, acknowledging the emotional toll of losing patients despite best efforts. It encouraged medical professionals to remain resilient and continue serving with dedication.
Amid public concern surrounding the circumstances of Nakimuli’s death, the Association called for patience and restraint, urging the public to allow any ongoing investigations to proceed without speculation.
It affirmed its readiness to provide technical and expert support to ensure a transparent and fact-based inquiry.
“Our priority is to pursue the truth and continually improve the medical services we provide to all Ugandans,” the statement added.
