Kasese: Hope Rises as Kikorongo–Mpondwe Road Upgrade Gains Momentum

By | April 6, 2026

Kasese District is witnessing growing optimism as the long-awaited upgrade of the 38-kilometer Kikorongo–Mpondwe road gains momentum, with works now at 12 percent completion.

For years, motorists and traders have endured difficult journeys along the route, navigating deep potholes, thick dust during the dry season, and slippery, muddy sections whenever it rains.

The situation has often left heavy trucks heading to the Mpondwe border stuck or moving at a snail’s pace, causing long traffic jams and disrupting cross-border trade.

The ongoing works are currently focused on improving drainage systems aimed at stabilizing the road and preventing further damage.

“The overall progress of the project now stands at 12 percent. We plan to have at least a 10-kilometer stretch paved by the end of this year,” said the project engineer, William Morris Nuwama.

The road, which serves as a major gateway to the Uganda–DRC border, is expected to significantly improve the movement of goods between the two countries once completed.

Officials say the upgrade will also provide a lasting solution to persistent congestion at the busy Mpondwe border point.

“We believe this project will ease traffic and improve trade. The road will be expanded to at least 11 meters in width to accommodate increased traffic flow,” said Moses Mugisa, the Town Clerk of Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council.

Authorities have meanwhile issued a stern warning to residents who have encroached on the road reserve, urging them to vacate to pave the way for expansion works.

“Residents who have settled within the road reserve must vacate immediately to allow construction works to proceed without interruptions,” warned the Kasese District Vice LCV Chairperson, Monday Girivazio.

Contractors have also called for cooperation from local leaders and communities to ensure the timely completion of the project.

“We urge everyone to cooperate fully with our teams. Together, we can ensure the project is completed on schedule,” Nuwama added.

Once complete, the Kikorongo–Mpondwe road is expected to transform transport and trade in Kasese, turning what has long been a challenging route into a smooth and efficient corridor for business and regional connectivity.
