The State Minister for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo, has ordered the immediate closure of all schools operating under the Maranatha education program following a tragic attack that left four young children dead in Ggaba, Makindye Division.
The affected institutions fall under one umbrella managed by Ggaba Community Church and include Ggaba Early Development Program, Ggaba Primary School, and Ggaba Secondary School.
The directive follows a brutal incident at Ggaba Early Development Program, where a man identified as Christopher Onyum allegedly attacked children, killing four and injuring several others, including a teacher. The shocking incident has plunged the Ggaba community into grief and fear.
In his directive, Minister Muyingo emphasized the urgency of establishing the truth behind the attack.
“All schools under the Maranatha program are to be closed immediately, and a comprehensive report on what transpired must be submitted without delay,” he ordered.
The deceased children have been identified as Gideon Eletu (2), Kaise Erungat (2), Ignatius Sserwange (3), and Ryan Odeke (2).
Scenes of mourning have gripped Ggaba’s Water Zone, where families and neighbors are gathering to console the bereaved. Burial arrangements are underway, with some of the bodies being transported to Gulu and Pallisa districts.
At the home of Kaise Erungat, mourners called on security agencies to intensify investigations and ensure swift justice. Similar appeals were made at the residence of Gideon Eletu, where relatives prepared for burial.
Residents have also urged the judiciary to expedite the case and impose severe penalties on those found responsible.
“We want justice, and we want it quickly. Those behind this must face the full force of the law,” one community member said.
Amid the tragedy, one child, Adonai Sserwadda, survived the attack. His mother recounted the terrifying ordeal, highlighting the urgent need for stronger safety measures in schools.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of children in learning institutions, with many now calling for tighter oversight—especially in privately run schools under religious organizations.
