Nyombi Pledges Computer Lab for Former School, Raises Concern Over Land Dispute

The Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission, Nyombi Thembo, has pledged to support digital learning at his former primary school while raising concern over a land dispute threatening part of the institution’s property.

During a visit to Semuto C/U Primary School, Thembo said he plans to establish a modern computer laboratory and donate equipment to ensure learners gain access to digital tools and skills needed in Uganda’s evolving technological landscape.

The school, located in Nakaseke District, served as the foundation of his early education. Thembo noted that investing in technology infrastructure at the school would help ensure pupils are part of the country’s digital future.

However, the visit also revealed concerns about a land dispute involving the school’s playground.

According to Thembo, individuals are reportedly attempting to claim ownership of the land despite the school having occupied the property since the 1940s.

He said the institution’s long-term presence provides a strong legal basis under the principle of adverse possession and historical land rights.

He advised the school administration to seek immediate legal redress to safeguard the playground and protect the asset for future generations of learners.

School land disputes remain a challenge in several parts of Uganda, sometimes threatening facilities such as playgrounds, classrooms, and other infrastructure essential for learning.

He emphasized that investing in communities goes beyond infrastructure development, noting that preserving history and supporting the people who shaped one’s journey is equally important.
