Judges, Registrars, and Research Magistrates of the Land Division of the High Court participated in a hands-on training session on the LexisNexis digital legal research and drafting platform on Wednesday, aimed at enhancing judgment writing and legal research.

The training was conducted by a team from the Judicial Training Institute (JTI), led by Senior Magistrate Grade I Joel Wegoye, alongside Magistrates Grade I Kahunde Khadija and Obizu Mallen. The team was welcomed by Lady Justice Patricia Basaza Wasswa on behalf of the Head of the Land Division, Lady Justice Damalie Lwanga, who was attending to court matters at the time.

In her opening remarks, Justice Basaza explained that the session was designed to help Judicial Officers familiarize themselves with the LexisNexis Tool ahead of a more comprehensive training scheduled in the near future.

During the session, Joel Wegoye highlighted the capabilities of LexisNexis, noting that, like the Uganda Legal Information Institute (ULII), it is an authoritative legal research platform that supports both legal drafting and judicial decision-making.

“The system provides access to a wide range of legal materials, including legislation and case law, and can be customized to meet the needs of different court divisions,” he said.

Wegoye further emphasized that the platform incorporates Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide personalized legal research support, allowing judicial officers to track cases, manage legal information efficiently, and access current legal developments across jurisdictions.

Judicial Officers who attended the training included Lady Justice Damalie Lwanga, Lady Justice Jane Elizabeth Alividza, Lady Justice Patricia Basaza Wasswa, Lady Justice Christine Kaahwa, Lady Justice Flavia Matovu Nasuuna, Lady Justice Christine Akello Echiokit, Justice Samuel Emokor, and Lady Justice Ida Nakiganda, alongside Registrars and Research Magistrates attached to the Division.

Participants were guided through the activation of their LexisNexis accounts, enabling them to immediately begin using the platform for legal research and judgment writing.

At the conclusion of the interactive session, Judicial Officers welcomed the introduction of the tool, noting that it would significantly ease their work by enabling quick and efficient access to relevant legal materials and supporting informed judicial decision-making.
