Bulange Mengo’s Luwalo lwaffe tradition came with an unexpected twist on its first 2026 collection day, as flying “guests” decided to help themselves to the buffet.
It is customary for the Kabaka’s guests—including representatives from various Masaza and Gombolola—to be served refreshments and food during Luwalo events.
With Shs142 million spent on lunch during 2025, the anticipation was high for this year’s feast.
However, as invited guests lined up at the buffet, a group of uninvited diners swooped in—literally.
Vultures were spotted snatching meat from plates, causing a mix of shock, laughter, and quick defensive maneuvers among attendees.
“Watch out! Protect your meat, those birds will snatch it!” screamed some of the guests who had already witnessed the theft, warning others to safeguard their portions.
Several guests resorted to briskly walking back to their tents with their plates in hand, while others kept a wary eye on the skies.
Even this reporter fell victim, losing two pieces of beef to one particularly swift bird.
The incident served as a lighthearted reminder that open-air buffets in Mengo are not only for humans: vigilance must extend to the winged visitors who might claim a bite or two.
Next time you attend a Luwalo feast at Bulange, it’s worth keeping your eyes up as much as your fork.
