Egypt’s Salah retains BBC African footballer of the year award

Egypt and Liverpool start Mohammed Salah was on Friday voted the BBC African footballer of the year for a second time in a row.

The forward, 26  whosaw the net 44 times for Liverpool last year beat fellow Liverpool player SadioMane, Medhi Benatia, Kalidou Koulibaly and Thomas Partey to the prize and became the first place since Jay- Jay Okocha to win the prize consecutively.

"It's a great feeling to win again. I'm happy and I would like to win it also next year. There have been many good moments in 2018,”Salah said.

Salah said his aim for 2019 is to guide his team win something

“I try to push myself every day to help the team win something,”

he added

The former Chelsea player who signed for the Reds from Roma in the summer of 2017 was instrumental for Liverpool’s run in the Champions League last season that saw them reach finals where they lost to Real Madrid.

Salah also guided Egypt to

their first World Cup since 1990.

He now joins fellow Egyptians including Mohamed Barakat in 2005 and Mohamed Aboutrika in 2008 who have won the BBC African Player of the year accolade.

The 26 year old Egyptian isalso shortlisted for the African footballer of the year awards by the football governing body in Africa, CAF.

The list released on Thursday saw Salah pitted against 9 other African footballers including UgandaCranes skipper Denis Onyango and fellow Liverpool star Sadio Mane among others from whom the best African footballer will be crowned at a function to be held in Dakar, Senegal on January 8.
