Masindi Municipality Records Only 26% Voter Turnout in Mayoral Elections

By | January 30, 2026

Statistics from the Masindi District Electoral Commission (EC) office indicate that only 26.07% of registered voters in Masindi Municipality participated in the mayoral elections held on Tuesday, 27th January 2026.

The elections, conducted nationwide, saw Municipal Mayors, City Division Chairpersons, and their councilors elected. In Masindi Municipality, official figures show that out of 62,912 registered voters, only 16,404 cast their ballots, leaving 46,508 voters, or 73.93%, abstaining from the vote.

The turnout mirrors that of last week’s Local Council Five elections but remains significantly lower than that seen in recent Presidential and Parliamentary polls.

Voters who spoke to reporters suggested that holding all elections on the same day could help address the persistently low turnout.

“There are people who work, and while voting for Presidents, we are given a public holiday. Bosses won’t allow us leave to vote on other days. They should consider letting us vote for all leaders on the same day,” said Annet Katwesige, a resident.

Others attributed the low turnout to voter fatigue and skepticism following previous results.

“Many people lost interest after their preferred candidates for President or Member of Parliament lost. You hear stories of fake DR forms, and then how do I get the energy to vote again? I’m not certain if my person will even be declared,” said Kenneth Atugonza, a local voter.

Roger Byamukama, the newly elected Masindi Municipality MP, emphasized the need for greater public awareness on the importance of local government elections.

“Many turn up to vote for President and MPs because these offices are more visible nationally. But district chairpersons, mayors, and councilors are closer to the people and directly deliver services. Voting responsibly at the local level ensures better services and representation,” Byamukama said.

The next phase of elections is scheduled for Wednesday, 4th February 2026, when voters will elect Sub County, Town, and Municipal Division Chairpersons along with their councilors, bringing the 2026 general election cycle closer to completion.
