Faustin Mukambwe Lukonge has been re-elected Mayor of Mityana Municipality, securing a second consecutive term after a closely contested mayoral race held ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Mukambwe, who has served as mayor for the past five years, contested on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, once again carrying the party’s flag in the municipal race.
His re-election reflects renewed confidence from voters who endorsed his leadership and performance during his first term in office.
The mayoral contest attracted six candidates, highlighting the highly competitive political landscape in Mityana Municipality.
Mukambwe faced strong competition from Tugume Moses Kafunda of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), alongside four other contenders: Mukalazi Baylon, Ssenabulya Wilber, Wotonava Fred, and Tuhirirwe Grace of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
According to the Mityana District Returning Officer, Charles Rebero, Mukambwe emerged victorious with 7,209 votes. He was followed by NRM’s Tugume Moses Kafunda, who secured 4,731 votes. Wotonava Fred finished third with 3,679 votes, while Tuhirirwe Grace polled 274 votes. Mukalazi Baylon received 183 votes, and Ssenabulya Wilber came last with 93 votes.
Declaring the results, Rebero said the election was conducted in line with established electoral guidelines and accurately reflected the will of the people of Mityana Municipality.
Upon being officially declared winner, Mukambwe expressed gratitude to the electorate for entrusting him with a second term and pledged to prioritise improved service delivery.
“The people of Mityana have given me another opportunity to serve them, and I do not take this trust lightly,” Mukambwe said. “This second term will focus on consolidating the gains we made in the first five years and addressing areas where service delivery fell short.”
He added that his administration will place greater emphasis on infrastructure development, improved sanitation, youth empowerment, and strengthening collaboration between the municipal leadership and central government agencies.
Mukambwe’s re-election further cements NUP’s influence in Mityana Municipality and signals continued political competition as the district heads into the broader 2026 general election season.
