Fact Check: UPDF has not Declared NUP a Rebel Group

By | January 26, 2026

A notice circulating online claims that the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has formally designated the National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s main opposition party, as a “rebel outfit,” and that its leaders including party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine have been arrested.

This claim is false.

The DisMis FakeNews Desk has established that the claim is not supported by credible evidence and appears to be a misrepresentation or fabrication arising from ongoing political tensions in Uganda.

Although the document presents itself as an official notice from the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs/UPDF, there is no corroboration from independent or reputable sources confirming that such a designation has been issued.

While Uganda’s political environment remains tense, with credible reports of arrests and clashes involving opposition supporters, no verified official document exists to support the claims made in the circulating notice.

Verdict: FALSE
