A delegation from the African Union Commission on Human Rights Compliance and Accountability, accompanied by representatives from the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), visited the Uganda Police Headquarters in Naguru on Thursday.
The team, led by Kareem Adebayo, held discussions with Deputy Inspector General of Police James Ocaya on ways to enhance collaboration and implement Compliance and Accountability Frameworks within the Uganda Police Force.
The meeting aimed to strengthen partnerships and explore mechanisms to ensure that the police adhere to international human rights standards and promote transparency and accountability in law enforcement.
While specific statements from the meeting were not publicly released, discussions likely focused on strategies for improving accountability and enforcing compliance measures across Uganda’s police operations.
The visit comes amid growing concerns about human rights in Uganda, particularly ahead of the 2026 general elections, with the Uganda Human Rights Commission emphasizing the need for investigations into alleged abuses.
The AU and UN delegation’s visit underscores their commitment to supporting Uganda in fostering a culture of accountability and respect for human rights within its security institutions.
