Buvuma Islanders Renew Calls for Government Action as Service Delivery Concerns Persist
Residents of Buvuma Islands say longstanding gaps in healthcare, compensation, infrastructure and land security remain unaddressed, prompting renewed appeals for government action as leaders from the ruling NRM promise substantive improvements ahead of the 2026 elections.

Residents of Buvuma Islands are voicing renewed concern over what they describe as persistent gaps in essential services and unmet pledges, pointing to challenges in healthcare, compensation delays and land security.

Many locals say they feel overlooked after election cycles, arguing that commitments made during campaign seasons have not been fully honoured.

“The government remembers us only during election time, but once they are elected, they forget about us for years,” said Matiya Kalange of Magyo Village.

Healthcare remains one of the island’s most pressing concerns. Residents describe limited access to basic medical services, with the government-provided boat ambulance unable to operate consistently due to fuel shortages.

Locals say this has hindered emergency response efforts.

“The boat ambulance could save lives, but it’s difficult when there’s no fuel,” one resident said.

Economic concerns are also growing. Farmers involved in coconut production say they are still awaiting compensation that reportedly totals Shs 28 billion. “We’ve been waiting for compensation for years,” said one farmer. “Life has been hard, and many of us remain in debt.”

Amid these concerns, the NRM has renewed its campaign activities in the region under the “Buganda for Museveni” initiative, led by Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka.

The party is working to strengthen support ahead of the 2026 elections, although some residents remain cautious about political promises.

Buvuma Member of Parliament Robert Migadde, who also chairs the campaign, acknowledged the community’s frustrations.

He said the compensation matter is being addressed and that improvements in local health services are underway.

“We know there are issues. We are working on them,” Migadde said, adding that the government intends to restore confidence through tangible actions.

Land concerns continue to be a major issue in areas such as Buwoya Subcounty, where residents fear displacement.

Locals say tensions with landlords and concerns about the National Forestry Authority’s activities have left many families uncertain about their future.

“We need assurance that land evictions will not continue,” one resident said.

In 2021, Buvuma’s electoral results reflected voter dissatisfaction as the NRM lost ground to the opposition.

Local leaders say that addressing land concerns, improving service delivery and strengthening trust will be essential if the party is to maintain or regain support in the upcoming elections.

Attorney General Kiwanuka urged residents to support the NRM, saying their concerns have been heard and will be addressed.

He encouraged islanders not to be swayed by opposition parties, arguing that the NRM has continued to invest in long-term development for the region.

“President Museveni will take action on these issues,” he said during a community engagement.

While some residents point to the palm oil project as a positive step, many say broader improvements are needed.

“There’s progress, but it’s not enough,” said a fisherman.

“People want assurances and real change.”

As the 2026 elections draw closer, the government’s ability to address the island’s longstanding concerns is likely to shape political outcomes and community trust in Buvuma.
