The Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, has commended the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) for their role in consolidating national security and advancing regional integration.
She made the remarks while officiating the launch of the 45th Tarehe Sita anniversary in Kisoro District.
Kigezi sub-region has been chosen to host the 2026 Tarehe Sita celebrations under the theme: “Defending the Gains of the Revolution and Honouring the Sacrifices of the Freedom Fighters: A Call for National Unity, Peace and Socio-economic Transformation.”
During her address, Nabbanja said the Tarehe Sita anniversary continues to serve as a foundation for national progress and highlighted Kisoro’s role as a hub of cross-border integration between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo—a milestone in regional collaboration.
“Tarehe Sita anniversary acts as a reminder of the resilience of the UPDF, patriotism, unity, and the partnership between the army and the people of Uganda,” Nabbanja said.
State Minister of Defense in charge of veteran affairs, Huda Oleru Abason, praised the UPDF’s dedication to serving Ugandans, promoting peace, and spearheading socio-economic transformation.
Lt. Gen. Samuel Okiding, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, lauded elders from Kigezi who played a significant role in Uganda’s independence and have contributed to maintaining national stability.
He noted that Uganda’s commitment extends beyond its borders, highlighting the UPDF’s peacekeeping presence in neighboring countries such as the DRC, South Sudan, and Somalia.
“We are not selfish; we are admired in the region. In Congo, where the UPDF operates, people have returned home, schools have reopened, and social services are being restored,” Lt Gen Okiding said.
Tarehe Sita commemorates Uganda’s journey since the 1986 liberation, honoring the sacrifices of freedom fighters while celebrating the country’s socio-economic transformation.
