Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) flag bearer for Mukono Municipality, Dustan Eddie Mbogo, has pledged to make urban cleanliness his top priority should he secure a seat in the next Parliament.
Speaking during the Mukono Municipality Parliamentary Debate hosted by NBS Television on Sunday, Mbogo assured voters that within his first 100 days in office, he shall ensure that Mukono is free of garbage.
“In my first 100 days in Parliament, I will ensure that Mukono is free of garbage. I intend to use the Shs 200 million that every MP receives upon entering Parliament to address this issue,” he said.
Mbogo emphasized that proper waste disposal is not merely an aesthetic issue but a matter of public health, environmental protection and community dignity. He noted that residents have endured years of uncollected garbage, clogged drainage channels and unsanitary living conditions, challenges he says can be addressed with decisive leadership and transparent use of public resources.
The FDC aspirant enters a competitive race that has attracted several contenders from across the political spectrum.
Mbogo adds his name to a highly contested parliamentary list not limited to Daisy Nabatanzi Sonko of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), George Fred Kagimu of the Democratic Party (DP), Sarah Nakintu of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) and Allan Mawanda of the Democratic Front (DF).
All are seeking to unseat incumbent legislator Betty Nambooze Bakireke, who is seeking yet another term in Parliament
Widely known as “Madam Teacher,” Nambooze has maintained strong support in Mukono Municipality over the years.
However, the growing field of challengers has intensified pressure on the incumbent as questions continue to surface about whether she will secure another victory.
In the May 2010 by-elections, then running under the Democratic Party (DP), Nambooze secured 16,413 votes defeating NRM’s Peter Balukaba Mukasa who garnered 14,302 votes.
In 2016, Nambooze secured 35,341 votes, beating NRM’s Fatuma Ndisaba, who received 23,129 votes.
In the last election, she again led with 38,383 votes, while DP’s George Fred Kagimu trailed with 16,209 votes.
With just six weeks to the elections, Mukono Municipality is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched battlegrounds, with infrastructure, service delivery, and waste management emerging as top voter concerns.
