Leaders in Buhweju have applauded President Museveni for promising to ensure the district gets the first-time tarmac road for the first time.

Speaking during a campaign rally at  Engaju Seed Secondary School playgrounds on Saturday afternoon, the NRM presidential candidate promised that Buhweju, the only district in Ankole without a tarmacked road, will finally receive a major tarmac road, alongside upgrades to health facilities and youth skilling programs.

“Bwizibwera—Nyakambu—Nsika—Nyakashaka—Nyakabirizi road is going to be tarmacked. We have already engaged Railway 18th Group Company to work on the road. Shs30 billion has been set aside to compensate those affected, and work will start soon,” Museveni said.

Reacting to the president’s promise, Buhweju County MP aspirant, Grace Agaba Byarugaba said tarmacking the road will be a great sigh of relief for the population.

“We produce a lot of items including millet, beans, tea and other agricultural produce but currently, we face difficulties in transporting them to the market because the roads are not good. We therefore welcome the president’s promise of tarmacking the Bwizibwera—Nyakambu—Nsika—Nyakashaka—Nyakabirizi road,” Byarugaba said.

She said tarmacking the road and many others will ease transportation of their produce to the market.

Buhweju was carved out of Bushenyi District in 2010.

Speaking on Saturday, Byarugaba hailed President Museveni and the entire NRM government for accepting to grant Buhweju a district status to “ bring services closer to the people.”

She however took a swipe at the current area representative in parliament, Francis Mwijukye of People’s Front for Freedom whom she said hasn’t lobbied for the district.

“Our  MP has not been able to work with the government, and because of that, we are lacking services.  So the people of Buhweju  have come up and said they are supporting me as one of theirs to go to parliament to be able to lobby for them,”Byarugaba said.
