Fort Portal Bishop Decries Increasing Child Neglect, Urges Responsible Parenting

The Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Muhirwa Akiiki, has expressed concern over the growing neglect of parental responsibilities by men, warning that the trend threatens the future and well-being of children.

Speaking on Saturday at the official launch of the Tinbet Green Primary School construction in Bigodi Town Council—where he laid a foundation stone and presided over a confirmation Mass—Bishop Muhirwa said a rising number of men are abandoning their obligations to their families, leaving mothers to shoulder the burden of raising children alone.

“We are seeing a worrying rise in men who are no longer responsible for their families. Some have turned to alcoholism and immoral behaviour, and this is affecting the well-being and future of our children,” he said.

The Bishop urged parents and guardians in Kamwenge District to protect and guide their children as they break off for the third-term holiday, noting that school holidays expose young people to various negative influences.

“I encourage all parents to jealously guard their children during this holiday. Please guide them, support them, and ensure they stay safe from harmful behaviours,” Bishop Muhirwa advised.

He further cautioned children against joining destructive peer groups, stressing that many young people end up in trouble because of the company they keep.

“Avoid peer groups that will lead you into danger. What you do today will have consequences in your future,” he told the confirmands.

Child neglect remains a major challenge in Uganda. According to the 2017–2018 Uganda Child Helpline report, neglect was the most reported form of child abuse, accounting for more than half of all cases. Broader national statistics show that almost three in ten children under five are stunted due to malnutrition, while many face violence, pointing to deep-rooted issues within families.

Reports also indicate that the situation deteriorated during the COVID-19 pandemic, as economic hardship drove many children into labour to support struggling households.

Bishop Muhirwa’s message serves as a strong reminder of the shared responsibility among parents and communities to protect children and secure a better future for them.
