IGP Ochola transfers Lira DPC following recent tensions

The Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola has transferred Lira District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Joel Tubonane to Kayunga with immediate effect.

In a message dated November 29, sent to all police directors, Tubonane was among the six police officers transferred in a mini reshuffle by the police chief.

Tubonane’s woes stem from last month’s incidents of violence in Lira where locals protested over the

death of an 11-year-old Dickens Okello, a primary Three pupil at Alito Primary School in Kole District.

It is alleged the victim was killed by two Indian nationals on November 9 prompting protests by locals accusing police of siding with the alleged aggressors.

A joint security team of both the army and police had to fire bullets to quell the protests and subsequently injured a number of protesters who were shot at..

The transfers also saw Kayunga DPC, Superintendent of Police George Obia replace Tubonane in Lira whereas Phillip Mukasa who has been in Somalia for the African Union return to Katonga region as the police spokesperson.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Daison Kiyombo who has just completed serving for the African Union Mission in Somalia has been sent to the ICT headquarters of the Uganda Police Force.
